We just finished a meeting with the local team in Nepal.

Our hearts have been heavy, and we have been deeply concerned and unsettled in many ways because of the shocking disaster that occurred in Nepal over the past two days. In particular, important Billion Soul Harvest gatherings had been scheduled in Nepal beginning September 14, and leaders from various local churches and organizations had been preparing together for these gatherings for a long time. In light of this unexpected and devastating disaster, we have been closely monitoring the situation and continuing to pray about how we should respond.

Today, we held an emergency meeting with the local leaders and had an in-depth discussion about the current situation and the way forward. As a result, we have come to the following conclusions.

August 27 Meeting Summary: Postponement of Events and Disaster Relief Ministry Plan

1. Discussion on Postponing the Events Due to the National Disaster

Situation on the Ground

Due to the recent disasters in the Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading areas of Nepal, many people remain missing. Among those reported missing are five pastors who were scheduled to attend the upcoming gatherings.

According to a report from the Chinese government, water continues to accumulate in one of the affected areas, creating the possibility of further disasters.

At present, not only the affected churches and believers but the entire local community is experiencing significant hardship.

Discussion Regarding the Scheduled Events

Through a joint effort of seven organizations under the Nepal Church Fellowship, Billion Soul Harvest had originally planned an intensive Movement Makers training for 400 young people during the week, followed by a large-scale weekend gathering of approximately 1,500 people.

However, concerns were raised that holding a large-scale event amid the current national disaster and period of mourning may not be appropriate.

In particular, holding a large gathering during a period of national mourning could potentially raise concerns or questions from the government.

Preparations had already been underway, including venue reservations, and a meeting with senior pastors had also been completed on August 26.

Conclusion

Considering the current disaster situation and the extent of the damage, it was agreed that it would be appropriate to postpone the scheduled events.

2. Alternative Plan: Transitioning to Disaster Relief Ministry

Young Cho respected the request to hold the planned gatherings at a later time. However, rather than simply postponing the events, he proposed redirecting the focus of this visit and ministry toward relief work to help those affected by the disaster.

The local team confirmed that practical relief work can currently be carried out and that there is an urgent need for assistance.

The following possible activities were discussed:

• Directly visiting affected areas to assess the situation on the ground

• Meeting with affected churches and church leaders

• Providing comfort and support to believers and pastors who have lost family members, property, and other belongings

• Providing practical relief assistance through the local church network

• Identifying additional forms of support that may be needed in the future

Conclusion

Young Cho agreed to actively consider participating directly in disaster relief ministry in Nepal instead of attending and conducting the originally planned gatherings. However, the final decision will be made after discussing the matter with the Korean team members.

3. Next Steps

• Young Cho will discuss the current situation and the possibility of transitioning to relief work with the other team members.

• After making a final decision regarding the Nepal visit and participation in relief activities, the local coordinators will be notified promptly.

• The team will confirm how to handle the venues that have already been reserved and the preparations that have already been made for the original events:

  • Whether cancellation is possible

  • Whether the events can be postponed and the venues rebooked for a future date

  • Whether the venues can, if necessary, be repurposed for relief work

• If relief work proceeds, a detailed action plan will be developed, including:

  • Affected areas to be visited

  • Local churches and contacts responsible for coordination

  • Visit schedule

  • Relief supplies and financial resources needed

  • Local logistics, including transportation and accommodation

  • Assessment of on-site safety conditions and the risk of further disasters

4. Matters Requiring Further Confirmation

The following two matters have not yet been determined in detail and require further discussion.

First, the specific schedule and implementation plan for the relief work have not yet been finalized. The team needs to determine which affected areas will be visited, through whom the relief activities will be carried out, and the specific financial, material, and safety requirements.

Second, follow-up action is needed regarding the preparations for the original events. The local team needs to confirm whether the venues already reserved and other preparations should be canceled, postponed to a later date, or partially utilized for relief activities.
